  • 1 (cup) green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 (cup) onion, chopped
  • 2 (teaspoon) vegetable oil
  • 2 (28.0 ounce can) vegetarian baked beans
  • 1 (12.0 ounce package) vegetarian burger crumbles* (look for gluten free, if needed)
  • 1/2 (cup) hot-and-spicy barbeque sauce
  • 1/4 (cup) brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 1/2 (teaspoon) dry mustard


  1. In a 12-inch nonstick skillet cook bell pepper and onion in oil until tender. Stir in beans, barbecue sauce,vegetarian burger crumbles, brown sugar and mustard. Bring to boiling. Reduce heat. Simmer fo 10 minutes. Serve as desired as a side dish or for a complete meal serve over rice, as a filling for baked potatoes or with a side of cornbread.
  2. *Note: An extra can of baked beans can be substituted to replace the vegetarian burger crumbles or ground beef or turkey can be used if a vegetarian dish is not needed (these substitutions will make this a gluten free dish).
  3. NOTE: Many (but not all) canned store bought vegetarian burger crumbles and baked beans are gluten free. Please read labels carefully.

    this makes a whole lot of beans! i have two little boys so i substitued the hot and spicy bbq sauce for honey bbq sauce...so far they seem to like it! i think this would be good for side dish...but really tasty!

    @Rene~ This is Chef Heather from Food on the Table. I am glad that you and your family liked this. Thanks for the suggestion about the BBQ sauce and making this as a side dish. This WOULD be a great side dish for barbeques this summer!

    Also I think that this would be great served over rice for a complete meal. You could also use ground turkey or ground beef in place of the vegetarian burger crumbles.

    heather--i also think that the brown sugar can be eliminated if using the honey bbq sauce--it probably would be sweet enough and the meal would have less sugar then too!

    @Rene~ Yes you are completely right! With the 'sweeter' BBQ sauce then the addition of the brown sugar is not needed. Thanks for leaving all your great comments and tips!

    Making it right now!!! We added ground beef, about a 1/2 lb to it, and honey bbq sauce....smells soooo good, can't wait for dinner:-)!!!

    I loved this high protein meal as a vegan. I did change a few things though - omitted the brown sugar since the BBQ sauce (I used smokey BBQ) and baked beans already had quite a bit of that - I used TVP hydrated with veggie broth instead of veggie crumbles (a little cheaper), and replaced one of the 28oz. cans of baked beans with one 15 oz can of white beans (since I already had this in the house and didn't want to make TOO much beans!) But very tasty as an entree with biscuits and a salad to round it out.

    My family loves this and they are constantly requesting it. I've made it with no meat and with ground turkey. Either way it's a hit.

    This was overly sweet, and tasted too much like plain old baked beans to be a main course.
