Moldy onion skins?

Are you supposed to just peel the outside layer of onions? I always go down another layer or so until there's no brownish skin left--do I have to bother doing that? Also, sometimes it seems like there's a little blackish mold there--should toss the whole onion?

You should peel away any papery layers on an onion. You do not want to use the brownish skin. The black mold is generally caused by aspergillus fungus. To be safe, you should simply throw away those that are contaminated.

Thanks for answering this. I always wondered if it was okay to just wash the black specks off or just get rid of the onion.
